You see, Christmas is no longer about draining Americanpockets so that China can build another glittering city. The Log Cabin (Then and Now)

The log cabin, used as a classroom and as meeting facilities, was built in 1933 and has been moved three times to make room for additional buildings. The Merritt Building was constructed in 1952, the "old" fellowship hall in 1957, the Children's Building in 1967, and the Fellowship Building in 1985. The Sanctuary was enlarged and a new Education Building was added in 1996.

For the 25+ years that my family has been a part of this wonderful church known as First United Methodist Church of Cary (FUMCC), we have had strong ties to this little cabin... but the ties that I have with it go back even further. When I was in third grade, we moved from Raleigh to Cary and, although we were members of First Baptist Church in Cary, I attended Cub and Boy Scouts here. My grandparents were also members of the church so I often visited services at FUMCC with them and knew many of the members there from school.

My Dad took a new job and we moved away from Cary to Atlanta when I was in the 9th grade and I was gone for 25 years, returning to Cary in 1986. Cary had fewer people (2,500) in the whole town when I moved away than FUMCC has as it's membership now - ~5,000.

Once we came back and visited both First Baptist and First Methodist, my wife and I agreed that FUMCC would be our church home and it has been for 25 years. We have raised three children in the arms of this church and the church has been a very important part of our lives over the years.

Since we've been back, I've been drawn into the work of this church in a number of ways and my opportunity to serve as a Lay Speaker and Sunday School teacher have been of great importance to me in my walk of faith. I've been teaching the Ellis-Bland Sunday School Class for ~15 years now and hope that will continue for years to come. I followed a teacher who - Dr. Bill Bland - who taught the class for 50 years before retiring. I've been called on to to preach from time to time as well over the years and the Log Cabin has often been the venue.

Try to imagine how honored I am - as a lay person - to be on the regular rotation of preachers for our Saturday Log Cabin worship services.

If you're in Cary on a Saturday evening and would like to worship in a casual, come as you are environment; pay us a visit and we'll welcome you with open arms. Whether the preacher that night is one of our ordained pastors or myself, you will be welcomed to worship in what is truly a historical and rustic cabin in the heart of bustling Cary.

Our major insurance company client is in continued growth mode and has created a role to spur that growth even more in their traditional lines. They have asked us to find a VP of Sales to bring them into the social networking arena and more to reach their target market which his aging baby boomers in the lower/middle income market as well as the Hispanic market. This is kind of like “Twitter meets WalMart” marketing and requires someone with social networking savvy, high energy, a hands-on approach and attitude.

This is really a hybrid sales and marketing combo role where the Senior Vice President of Traditional Lines Sales will be responsible for organizational strategy, design, implementation and leadership of traditional lines sales. This position will be involved in new product development, new product rollout, and coordination of sales through current and new distribution channels.

Here are some details of what we’re looking for:
•Leadership: a demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others
•Planning: an ability to think ahead and plan over a 1-2 year time span
•Management: the ability to organize and manage multiple priorities
•Ten or more years of experience in consumer oriented sales

The person we’re after doesn’t necessarily have to come from the Insurance Industry but some understanding of the market would be extremely helpful since compliance and legal issues are part of the daily bread here. Obviously they want someone who can think outside of the box, reinvigorate the business and have the energy and foresight to lead the charge in their Social Media program.

Our client is a holding company – write no paper with their brand – policies are w written through other firms that are part of the holding company as well. They’re a niche company – focused only deal on the fastest growing segment of the market – the senior market with supplemental life, health, dental; supplemental Medicare, etc. They sell ONLY direct to the consumer so their goal is to have the SVP of Sales pioneer new ways to reach that market.

Key to this role is the location – right near Mickey Rat, in Orlando. So… if you like Mickey and his goofy friends, this could be the place for you. They have a comprehensive relocation program that does everything short of buying homes.

So… again, we are looking for someone who can think outside the box is creative and innovative – able to drive a matrixed sales organization. There are, however; no direct reports at the moment. Need to be “new-world” thinker, a risk-taker, someone who can move their target customer base away from the mailman to smartphone mentality; someone who can help develop Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, etc. for them – re-brand them, essentially.

The compensation for this role includes a base salary in the $175K to $200K+ range with a bonus that is targeted at 25% bonus of base salary (paid annually) and based 50/50 on company/individual MBO.

Our Ideal candidate will be a sales/marketing individual with a personality bordering on gregarious – not looking for the typical stuffed shirt, boring person often associated with insurance. The SVP of Sales will need to be able to paint a picture of what a long-term strategy would be and have a vision for how to get there.

Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC,offered one of the best quotes I've heard in all this drama about the debt ceiling: "I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told Becky Quick. "You just pass a law that says, that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election."

Now... if we made the same thing apply to the POTUS, this could be THE recipe for fiscal success.

At least be a good bad example, if nothing else.
